Romp ‘n Stomp – Spring 2018!

The Leelanau County Soccer Club (LSC) hosted its 8th annual Fall Romp N Stomp at the Myles Kimmerly soccer fields in Maple City on Saturday, June 2, 2018. LSC facilitates both recreational and select (LSC United – formerly the “M22s”) soccer opportunities for area youth in the spring and fall. The Romp N Stomp is a countywide recreational tournament that is held at the end of the fall and spring soccer seasons. Over 500 kids ranging from 4 to 13 years in age participated in the spring’s Romp N Stomp. Dedicated trophies for the U9 age division and older are updated with the names of the champion team’s players and coaches each season and are then circulated through area schools.

LSC was pleased to welcome six teams from Traverse City (TBAYS) and one team from Bellaire to participate in our U10 and U12 age divisions and a total of three North Star girls-teams in the U9 and U7 age groups.

LSC recreational teams are built around the four ‘areas’ where there are soccer fields available: Glen Lake, Leland, Northport, and Suttons Bay. In some of the older age groups and all of LSC’s select teams, the LSC United, the teams are made up of kids from across the county as well as kids from Traverse City and Benzie County.

The under 5 age group (2013 birth years and younger) kicked off the action with the U5 All-Star Stampede. Over 30 youngsters took to the pitch to get things going on the small sided, just-for-fun fields. In the under 7 age group (2011-2012 birth years) a total of six girls teams and eight boys-teams played two games each throughout the course of the day. This is the first time LSC has featured girls and boys-specific divisions for this age group.

In the under 9 age group (2009-2010 birth years), a total of nine girls teams and seven boys-teams played two games each to compete for a spot in the semi-finals. The semi-finalists on the boys’ side included two Suttons Bay teams (SB1 – Coach Rokita and SB2 – Coach Zachman) and two Leland Teams (LB1 – Coach West and LB2 – Coach Denoyer). SB2 and LB2 dueled it out in a hotly contested final, won by Leland’s LB2 team by a score of 5 to 4. The semi-finalists on the girls’ side included two teams from the Leland area (LG1 – Coach Warner and LG2 – Coach Grinage), the North Star Green team (Coach Rix) and the Suttons Bay SG1 team (Coach Walters). The finalists, LG1 and SG1, played to the wire with SG1 prevailing by a score of 2 to 1.

In the under 10 age group (2008 birth year), four girls teams and four boys-teams competed in semi-final format to play for the championship with the winners and losers advancing to the championship or the consolation match. In the U10 Boys division, the Leland team coached by Jim Chacon and Logan Suttman advanced past TBAY’s Team Ecuador (Coach Larrea) and then defeated Glen Lake (Coach Switzer) to win the championship by a score of 3 to 1. Team Ecuador defeated Suttons Bay (Coach O’Boyle) in the consolation match. In the U10 Girls division, the Leland team coached by Kelly Mitchell squared off against the Northport-Suttons Bay team coached by Neil Weatherbee in the most highly contested championship game of the tournament. Leland won it all in shootouts after the teams played to a 3-3 tie through overtime. The Glen Lake girls also won a tight contest against TBAY’s Team Tanzania in the consolation match (3 to 2).

In the under 12 age group (2006 and 2007 birth years), five girls-teams and six boys-teams played two games each to determine the teams that advanced to the championships. The boys’ teams played their preliminary rounds at the Glen Lake School fields and it was the Leland 1 team (coached by LSC alum Isaac Berg) and the Suttons Bay 2 team (coached by LSC alum Brandey Albarado) that advanced to the finals with undefeated records in the preliminary rounds. Coach Berg’s team defeated Coach Albarado’s team by a score of 7 to 2. Team Norway (TBAY’s, coach Booher) advanced to the girls’ finals after finishing undefeated in the preliminary rounds. Team Portugal edged out LSC’s combined girls-teams based on points to advance to the finals, though the LSC girls had defeated Team Portugal in head-to-head play in the preliminary rounds. Team Norway went on to win it all in the final by a score of 3 to 0.
