The Leelanau County Soccer Club (LCSC) hosted its 5th annual Romp N Stomp at the Myles Kimmerly soccer fields in Maple City on Saturday, October 24, 2015. LCSC facilitates both recreational and select soccer opportunities for area youth in the spring and fall. The Romp N Stomp is a countywide recreational tournament which is held at the end of each fall season. Trophies are awarded to the winning age groups and circulated through area schools. Over 290 kids ranging from 4 to 12 years in age participated this past fall season. For the recreational league teams are built around the four ‘areas’ where there are soccer fields available: Glen Lake, Leland, Northport and Suttons Bay. In some age groups and in LCSC’s select program, teams are assembled from kids throughout the county.
In the under 12 (U12) age group, the Leland boys team, coached by Lorelei Grant, and a County girls team, coached by Randy U’Ren, each took home the trophy with their best record after round robin play. A total of six teams represented the U12 age group this fall.
The victor from the under 10 (U10) girls division was Leland, coached by Jeff Thompson, which edged out the Suttons Bay team coached by Jon Lint. On the boys side, the Suttons Bay team, coached by Len Mankowski narrowly defeated the Suttons Bay team coached by Brian Glynn to win the gold in bracket play. A total of nine teams represented the U10 age group this fall.
This is the first year that the under 8 (U8) age division has been separated into “boys” and “girls” teams – the U8 division has traditionally been co-ed. In the inaugural U8 boys division, the Leland team, coached by Chris Kropp, was victorious over the Suttons Bay team coached by Jim Chacon. In the girls division, coach Dave Wascievicz’s team from Leland edged out the Suttons Bay team coached by Bryan Lynch to win the first U8 girls trophy. A total of 12 teams participated in the U8 bracketed play.
Nine teams in the under 6 (U6) age group participated by playing two games apiece. The U6 age group does not compete for trophy’s at the Romp N Stomp – they helped to keep the day’s theme focused on fun for all, on what turned out to be a beautiful fall day.
